How important is cultural identity to you?

Do you think that your country (wherever it is) is losing its identity? Do you think it is important to retain some of that identity? The rise in immigration means that most countries are quite multicultural now. Obviously, this is great. It's really important to meet people from different backgrounds and cultures, but do you think that identity is being lost in some aspects? What about the aggressive exportation of American culture? How do you think that has contributed to the change in cultural identity in other parts of the world? Do you think your own country has become Americanized?

Just interested in what you guys think. I know this is a big debate in Britain right now.How important is cultural identity to you?
America is a marketplace of ideas

Our culture worked as long as the best ideas won

Now, we're into mutli-culturalism, which treats ideas as equally valid, even if they're not best

I'm an American with Canadian, Irish and Belarusian heritage. In some ways, yes, I've lost touch with my heritage. But I've been raised with the American culture, which is such an awesome mishmash of every culture there is that I don't feel like I've lost anything at all. I think that cultures will always be changing, perhaps not as quickly as some may think; when there are still little Belarusian villages out in the middle of nowhere doing everything the traditional way, I'm not too worried. People will find their own culture, regardless of where they're at or where they're from. How important is cultural identity to you?
