What causes people dissociative identity disorder to change alters?

What triggers the switch? What does it feel like? Are you able to control and stop from switching alters? How do you do it?What causes people dissociative identity disorder to change alters?
It is because of multiple confusions. What causes people dissociative identity disorder to change alters?
Alters are different personalities a person has to protect them from a situation. For an alter to need to change, that means that the alter that was currently in control was not for the situation, and he/she got the alter that WAS capable of handling it to take over.

There is no trigger, just the change of a situation.

No, you are not able to stop/start the change of alters. Most of the people that have DID or MPD don't even know that they have it.
