Alters are different personalities a person has to protect them from a situation. For an alter to need to change, that means that the alter that was currently in control was not for the situation, and he/she got the alter that WAS capable of handling it to take over.
There is no trigger, just the change of a situation.
No, you are not able to stop/start the change of alters. Most of the people that have DID or MPD don't even know that they have it.
