In Aussie and NZ there is a thing called 'Deed Poll'. Here you can register your change of name - it檚 quite legal to go by any name you choose, as long as your intention is not to defraud anyone. You don檛 have to apply to any authority to change your name. However, many organisations (banks, for example) require proof of identity, so if you change your name you檒l need official evidence of the change - basically it is like a new birth cert.
In extreme circumstances such as; if you are a victim of crime etc, police will be able to help you out with this.
You usually do this at a court house where birth/death and marriage cert's are issued.
